Safa’s story is one of resilience, healing, and hope. Born to Lebanese parents who fled civil war and started over in Australia, she grew up surrounded by unspoken trauma. Without today’s mental health awareness, her parents silently carried PTSD and anxiety, passing down unhealed wounds that shaped her early years. By age 9, her parents’ marriage had ended, and she and her siblings were left to manage school, finances, and family care while their mother worked long hours.
A turning point came when Safa, still a teenager, sought medical help for her mother, leading to a long-overdue diagnosis of bipolar disorder, depression, and schizophrenia. Suddenly alone and facing homelessness, Safa discovered her strength and determination to break free from survival mode. Years later, she found a mentor who guided her in healing past trauma and building resilience. Now, Safa dedicates her life to helping others overcome similar struggles, offering hope and empowerment to those seeking to heal and rewrite their own stories.

The most intense episode Safa recalls occurred when she was 18 years old. Her mother, battling mental illness, locked herself in her room in the dark for eight months, refusing to eat, socialise, or allow any sunlight into her life. During this time, she lost 35 kilos. A life-changing moment came when Safa, after completing a grueling 12-hour shift at her job, came home to a Sheriff placing an eviction notice on their home, due to her mother's failure to pay rent for five months. This devastating news came just three days before Safa's 18th birthday. Distraught, confused, and angry, Safa found herself alone with her 13-year-old brother, with nowhere to go and no family to turn to.
In her search for help, Safa faced rejection after rejection from community housing services, leaving her feeling hopeless and abandoned. Realizing she had to fight for herself and her brother, Safa sought professional help to diagnose her mother's mental illness. After an assessment, her mother was immediately placed under medical care, and Safa was left to pack up their belongings and put them into storage. With no place to call home, Safa found herself homeless for the first time in her life. Despite the overwhelming challenges, Safa found a one-bedroom apartment and worked tirelessly to build a better life, fighting her way out of survival mode.
Years of haunting memories and trauma led Safa to eventually find a mentor who guided her toward healing. After 30 years of silent suffering, her mother was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, depression, and schizophrenia—illnesses that had plagued her for years. Safa now dedicates her story to raising awareness about mental health, breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness and disability, and helping others identify unhealthy behaviors and heal from trauma.
