Why Healing Is Not Linear and What to Do When You Feel Like You Are Going Backwards

You have been doing the work. Therapy, reflection, genuine effort to change old patterns. And for a while it felt like progress — like something was actually shifting. And then something happens. You react exactly the way you used to react. You fall back into a pattern you thought you had moved past. You feel further from where you want to be than you did at the start.

This is one of the most discouraging experiences in the healing process. And it is also one of the most universal. Because healing is not a straight line. It never has been.

What Healing Actually Looks Like

We have been sold a narrative about healing that looks like a smooth upward trajectory. But the reality is something more like a spiral. You come back to the same themes, the same wounds, the same patterns — but each time you come back you are meeting them from a slightly different place. With slightly more understanding. With slightly more capacity to respond differently. What feels like going backwards is often actually going deeper.

Why Setbacks Are Part of the Process

The brain does not rewire itself in a straight line. Old neural pathways — the patterns that were built through repetition and emotional intensity — do not simply disappear when you decide to change them. They fade gradually, through consistent new experiences that build new pathways alongside them. A setback does not erase the progress you have made.

How to Respond to a Setback

The most important thing you can do when you experience a setback is not to give up on the process. The setback is part of the process. Notice what happened without catastrophising it. Use the setback as information rather than evidence that you are hopeless. And then be as kind to yourself about it as you would be to a friend in the same situation.

Progress Is Not Always Visible

Some of the most significant healing happens underground. In the shifts in your nervous system that you cannot directly observe. In the slight pause before you react that was not there six months ago. Progress does not always feel like progress. Sometimes it just feels like hard work in the dark.
