Why Perfectionism Is Not a Strength (And What It Is Really Hiding)
Share
I used to wear perfectionism like a badge. I thought it meant I cared more than other people. That I had higher standards. That the relentless drive to do everything flawlessly was evidence of my dedication.
It was not until I burned out completely, sitting on my bathroom floor at two in the morning, unable to move because I had pushed past every possible limit, that I started asking a different question. Not how do I do this better. But why does it never feel like enough.
That question cracked something open. And the answer had nothing to do with standards. It had everything to do with fear.
Perfectionism Is Not About Excellence
True excellence comes from curiosity and a genuine love of growth. Perfectionism comes from fear. The fear that if you are not flawless, you will be found out, rejected, or deemed not good enough.
Someone pursuing excellence can rest when the work is done. Someone driven by perfectionism cannot. There is no version of done that feels safe. There is always something that could be better.
Where It Comes From
Most perfectionists grew up in environments where love, approval, or safety felt conditional on performance. Maybe praise only came when you achieved. Maybe mistakes were met with criticism or shame. Maybe you learned early that being exceptional was the safest way to secure your place.
The Real Cost
Perfectionism costs you time, constantly. It costs you relationships, because people cannot reach you through the wall of relentless doing. It costs you joy, because achievements are immediately discounted. It also costs you creativity and risk-taking, the very things that lead to genuine excellence.
